Am I Eligible for TAROM Delayed Flight Compensation?

Under EU Regulation 261/2004, TAROM protocols work to compensate those who face issues with their flights under the following rules:

  • Your flight is carried by TAROM airline.
  • Your flight has been delayed for more than three hours.
  • You are taking a flight operated by TAROM airline from an airport in a third country to an airport in the territory of a Member State of the European Union. Or you are departing from an airport located in the territory of a Member State of the European Union.
  • You have a confirmed reservation on the flight in question, and you should show up for check-in at the time the airline specifies (except with cancellations), or at least 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time if no time is specified.
  • You booked a ticket that was issued under a public fare, or a ticket that was issued under a commercial or flyer program.
  • One of the following situations occurs: denied boarding, flight cancellation, flight delay, upgrading and downgrading.

Keep in mind that a journey involving an outbound and a return is not considered a single flight, even though it can be subjected to a single reservation.

What Am I Entitled to If My Flight with TAROM Is Delayed?

Your entitlement depends on the amount of time your flight is delayed. If your flight is delayed by two hours or more, you’ll get access to sending some emails, faxes, or making phone calls. Also, TAROM’s ground staff will serve you some drinks and food.

If the flight delay extends to days rather than hours, TAROM is obligated to supply accommodation, daily allowances, transportation to and from the airport, as well as compensation and arrangements for the return flight.

How Much Compensation Am I Entitled for TAROM Flight Delay?

After informed yourself about the compensation preconditions and seeing yourself eligible for it, you can claim TAROM reimbursement. The amount basically depends on the distance of the flight. Check the following table for more information.

Can TAROM Airline Decline My Compensation Claim?

Some out-of-hand incidents happen that lead to delays or cancellations of TAROM flights. For example, in an incident at the airport, a strike by air traffic control staff, or bad weather, there's no compensation available.

Other than these extraordinary circumstances, there are some cases when passengers aren’t eligible for compensation:

  • Passengers who travel for free or at a discounted rate are not made directly or indirectly available to the public.
  • Multimodal journeys involving more than one mode of transport under a single transport contract.
  • Flights included in a package tour that is cancelled for reasons other than aircraft cancellations.
  • Flights are made using any kind of aircraft other than fixed-wing aircraft.

TAROM Flight Cancellation Compensation

If you have been informed of the cancellation of your travel plans due to TAROM flight problems, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with Europe's EC 261 air passenger rights.

To prevent last-minute flight cancellations by airlines, Europe implemented a set of well-defined air passenger rights under the name EC 261.

Even though these laws work to compensate passengers in case of cancelled flights, TAROM isn’t obligated to pay any compensation in the following cases:

  1. If your flight was cancelled more than 14 days before its departure time.
  2. If your rescheduled departure arrives at the same time comparable to your original departure time. The law is fair and allows airlines not to pay compensation if you can reach your destination with minimum inconvenience.

What Am I Offered When My Flight Is Cancelled?

  1. In case of flight cancellation, you have many options to choose from regarding your flight.
You can either be redirected to your destination in the shortest period possible or get TAROM reimbursement of the full ticket price based on the original purchase price. The payment can be made within 7 days.
  2. Have some meals and drinks during the waiting time.
  3. Make two telephone calls, faxes, or emails, free of charge.
  4. Hotel accommodation and transportation between the airport and place of accommodation in cases where you have to stay for one or more nights.

How Much Will I Be Compensated for My Cancelled TAROM Flight?

The exact amount of compensation depends on several variables, such as:

  • Travel Distance: The length of the route you plan to take.
  • Length of Delay: This is based on how much later your final destination would be reached by the alternative flight.

Since we recognize that navigating these variables can be a little challenging, we've created a thorough chart that breaks down the compensation amounts for flight disruptions in Euros (€) compared to the flight distance for your convenience.

Distance Compensation
All flights 1,500 km or less €250
Internal EU flights over 1,500 km €400
Non-internal EU flights 1,500 km - 3,500 km €400

TAROM Denied Boarding Compensation

In case airline company oversells tickets, you may be denied boarding even if your ticket is valid. If the airline involuntarily denies your flight due to overbooking, you can be entitled to EU-261 denied boarding compensation.

Why Does Overbooking Happen?

Sometimes the airline accepts selling too many tickets in case some of the passengers won’t show up on time to check in.

If eventually, the number of customers that checked in is more than the number of flight seats, the company may ask some of you to give up their seats and fly later (on the same day or another day).

In this situation, you can get both of:

  • Denied boarding compensation
  • New flight to your destination.

Keep in mind that these options are only available in case of TAROM denied flights due to overbooking.

If your flight is denied due to personal issues like travel documents or visa, or that your passport expires soon, you can't be compensated. Also, you won't be entitled to any TAROM reimbursement if you voluntarily give up your seat.

Voluntary vs Involuntary Denied Boarding

What’s the difference between voluntary and involuntary denied boarding?

There are instances in which you have no options. "Involuntary denied boarding" is the term used when a passenger meets all travel requirements but is nonetheless denied access to board a plane.

You can also choose to volunteer and fly later. There are moments when volunteering just makes sense, so if you are ever requested to give up your seat on a flight you might choose to take advantage of the situation.

Gates agents frequently offer passengers discount codes, vouchers and airline travel credits, as well as complimentary hotel, stays in exchange for their cooperation.

If the airline denied you boarding and it wasn't your fault, you should obtain compensation for denied boarding under European regulation. However, in case of "voluntary denied boarding, you won’t be entitled to TAROM denied boarding compensation.

What Are My Rights If I Have Been Denied Boarding Due to TAROM Overbooking?

As a passenger, you have several rights in the case of flight cancellation due to overbooking. According to European legislation, you are entitled to compensation of up to €600 depending on the distance of the flight.

Mainly, the amount of TAROM compensation depends on the flight's distance and the number of hours you are delayed before reaching your destination.

Flight Distance Compensation Amount
Less than 1500 km 250€
1500 km to 3500 km 400€
Over 3500 km Up to 600€

On-Time Performance Of TAROM

On-time performance is a measure of how often a flight arrives on time. A flight is considered on time when it arrives within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time.

Aircraft load: At this moment, the TAROM company has the highest load factor of the last decade, with 86% of the available seats full, slightly above the European average and 10% above the load factor recorded in the pre-pandemic period", the cited document reveals.

On-time arrival rate: For the past 6 months, TAROM’s performance was up to 100%. However, in September there was a drop to 96%, yet it's considered a good result.

It’s crucial to understand that this does not reflect TAROM’s current performance as the statistics have been fluctuating across various periods.

Even though TAROM is trying to improve their quality, numerous negative feedback are published online regarding its bad service. However, Click2Refund focuses more on the best customer experience and uplifting the refund journey.
