Is Swiss International Air Lines Reliable?

Swiss Int. Air Lines has been in trouble for the last few years. The airline received massive backlash in 2022 due to a huge number of delayed flights, a situation that repeated in 2023.

Just last year, the airline admitted that over a third of all flights take off late. The situation in 2023 saw a minor improvement but it still isn’t up to the mark.

In 2023, only 65% of flights left within 15 minutes of the first announced departure time. A total of 35% of flights saw a delay of 15 to 30 minutes, and 21% were delayed by over 30 minutes

The airline had 169 canceled flights last year, which is a very high number. However, reports show that a large number of these cancelations were linked to natural situations.

Unfortunately, 2024 appears to be another difficult year for the airline as over a dozen flights have been canceled so far this year, including several from Zurich Airport, the airline’s home.

Consumers are calling for a boycott but they can’t look away since Swiss Int. Air Lines is very big and it flies from most major airports in Switzerland. We understand it might be your only or at times the best option. Still, if your flight has been canceled or delayed then you should waste no time.

Are there conditions to receive Swiss flight delay compensation?

Yes, there are some conditions and requirements. Your claim will be approved only if you meet those requirements. Here’s a list:

  • The delay must be long, i.e.: at least three hours. Compensation is not provided for shorter delays.
  • The delay should be within the airline's control, such as technical issues, crew problems, or other operational issues. Delays due to extraordinary circumstances like bad weather or air traffic control issues may exempt the airline from compensation obligations.
  • Swiss Int. Air Lines must not have informed passengers of the delay at least 14 days before the scheduled departure.
  • You must have a valid booking and be able to provide the necessary documentation, including your boarding pass and any communication from the airline regarding the delay.
  • Compensation may be denied if the delay or disruption was caused by the passenger's behavior, violation of airline policies, or other factors within the passenger's control.

We understand this might sound overwhelming. Make it easy by heading to Click2Refund’s automatic calculator and determine if you are eligible for Swiss Airlines flight delay compensation.

The calculator takes less than 2 minutes and only a little information is required.

Swiss Airlines Flight Compensation Rules

Although Switzerland is not the part of the European Union (EU), all Swiss Int Air Lines flights are governed by The Air Passengers Rights Regulation 2004, more popularly known as EC 261/2004. Because the Regulation is applicable Switzerland in accordance with the Agreement between the European Community and the Swiss Confederation on Air Transport (1999).

The rule applied to all EU airlines, including Swiss Int. Air Lines, and also non-EU airlines that leave EU countries.

The law is very clear about available compensation:

up to €600 if your flight is delayed given that it qualifies.

What does not qualify?

As mentioned above, you will receive compensation only if your flight qualifies.

  • Delays caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline's control, such as severe weather conditions, air traffic control strikes, security threats, natural disasters, or medical emergencies, may exempt the airline from compensation obligations.
  • If the airline offers passengers the option to voluntarily rebook their flights or provides compensation (such as vouchers, meals, or accommodation), and the passenger accepts, they may waive their right to additional monetary compensation.
  • If the airline informed passengers of the flight delay at least 14 days before the scheduled departure, compensation claims may be rejected.
  • Compensation is generally not provided for minor delays that do not exceed a certain threshold, typically less than 3 hours. Short delays may be considered part of normal airline operations.
  • Delays that result in missed connecting flights on separate tickets may not be eligible for compensation, as the airline may not be responsible for the passenger's entire journey.
  • Compensation may be denied if the delay or disruption is a result of the passenger's behavior, violation of airline policies, or any actions within the passenger's control.
  • Events classified as force majeure, including war, political instability, acts of terrorism, and other events beyond the airline's control, may exempt the airline from compensation obligations.

All in all, you will have to prove that it was the ‘airline’s fault’ and not yours or the nature’s.

Reminder: A time limit exists. You only have 2 years from the incident to file a claim in Switzerland. However. Time limit may differ according to the jurisdiction country (i.e. 3 years in Germany, 5 years in Spain and France). The airline has the right to decline claims if they come after this time period. You can get more information about the time limitations and how far back you can claim flight delay compensation on our blog.

What about Swiss International Air Lines flight cancelation?

Cancelation will entitle you to compensation. The law is very clear on this aspect. Here are some of the main pointers worth knowing:

  • The airline is liable to provide passengers with a refund or an alternate flight if the original flight is canceled. It must be mentioned that passengers are required to be given the option to choose from a refund or an alternate flight.
  • The above is applicable when a flight is canceled at least 14 days before the scheduled departure. Passengers can claim compensation (up to €600 per person) if there are less than 14 days to the flight.

It must be noted that Swiss may decline compensation if it is able to find an alternative flight that helps you reach your destination at the given time. Still, some other compensation tools might be available.

Swiss Flight Delay Rules

A delay can be an excuse to file for compensation but only if you meet these conditions:

  • Your flight was delayed for more than three hours.

How much you can claim depends on a variety of factors:

    • Your flight was within the EU covering over 1,500 km: You can claim €250 Swiss airline delay compensation.

    • Your flight was outside the EU covering over 3,500 km: You can claim €300 Swiss delay compensation for flights that are delayed between 3-4 hours.
    • Your flight was outside the EU covering over 3,500 km: You can claim €600 Swiss airline delay compensation for flights that are delayed for 4 or more hours.

Swiss Delayed Flight Compensation Mistakes to Avoid

Do not give the airline a reason to reject your request. Be careful and avoid these common mistakes:

  • Say no to poor offers from the airline, including travel vouchers and refunds. Airlines are known for making offers to end matters. They don’t want people to file complaints or claim compensation because it doesn’t only impact their reputation but also causes monetary loss. They offer small cash amounts and free tickets that are often less in value than what you deserve. So, don’t make this mistake.
  • Do not sign compensation agreements until you’re sure it is the maximum or rightful amount you can get. Talking to our team can be a great way to be sure. We’ll help you determine if what you’re being offered is the best you can get or if there’s scope for more. We always have your best interest as our priority.
  • Do not be late and make sure to file a compensation within the specified time period. This is important because, as mentioned above, there is a time limit of three years. Your request will not be entertained if you file a complaint after this period has passed.
  • The ‘do it yourself” approach is not the best option here because a lot is at stake. Taking care of all documents can be nerve wracking and confusing. Don’t put yourself in stress. Work with a reliable firm like Click2Refund so that there are no mistakes.
